Family: Pomacanthidae, Marine Angelfish. These are unrelated to the freshwater angelfish, which are tropical cichlids from the Amazon Basin.

Size: To 28 cm

Distribution: Northern Australia and Southern New Guinea; with some sightings in Taiwan having been reported.

Status: Least concern.

Habitat: Sheltered inshore reefs, sponge gardens (which most probably includes "octopuses' gardens, as featured in the song by The Beatles).

About the Scribbled Angelfish

The distinctively coloured Scribbled Angelfish has a colourful, dark blue body with pale blue horizontal scribbles. Yellow snout. Vertical yellow band behind pectoral fin. Large white patch behind its head. Yellow horizontal stripe below the dorsal fin. Yellow pectoral, tail, and pelvic fins. Blue dorsal and anal fins.

Breeding: After spawning, the number of eggs created can vary from 5,000 to 33,000! That's a lot of eggs.

Economics: Occasionally found in the aquarium trade.
